60 second interview with Adrian Murtagh- chief coach and owner of Just Smart Thinking.
Adrian, why are you doing this?
I totally believe in the power of life coaching and want as many people as possible to experience the benefits of it. By creating Just Smart Thinking, I want to make life coaching affordable and accessible to everyday people.
What experience and qualifications do you have?
After gaining my coaching qualification from New-U Coaching, I have been sharing these techniques with many different people over the past 8 years. As a qualified Psychiatric Nurse I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques and practised for many years in community hospitals running different types of supportive interventions including group therapies and one to one sessions. I was the lead therapist for acute anxiety, depression and stress management groups. As a trained counsellor, I spent over 10 years specialising in addiction counselling both in the UK and Australia.
I was part of a team at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Department (Dundee University), carrying out research into different drug and alcohol issues. While overseas in Australia, I worked for the National Drug Addiction Centre (New South Wales University) carrying out research into the differences between private and public methadone clinics. During this time I ran personal development courses in a training centre for a wide range of individuals and groups. These courses dealt with issues such as self-esteem, self-talk, visualisation, affirmations, personal goal setting, self limiting beliefs, confidence building, balance wheels and self-awareness.
Why do you think you’re good at coaching?
I have found that people find me approachable and trustworthy. I really enjoy meeting people and I am very comfortable creating coaching partnerships. Where both the individual and I not only grow but also enjoy the conversations and experience.
What areas are you developing through coaching at the moment?
For me, I am further developing Just Smart Thinking, building my skills around business. As a member of the International Coaching Federation I am always refining and building my coaching skills through this network. I complete a balance wheel every 6 months and this allows me to focus on certain areas of my life that I want to address.
What does happiness mean to you and what makes you happy?
Happiness is a big driver for me. If I am doing something and I am not enjoying it (or I’m not laughing a lot!) I question why am I doing it?
What Just Smart Thinkers think of Adrian
"Adrian was great! He initially managed to set my mind at ease as I was quite emotional about my situation at the time. He got me to look around and assess my situation to realise that life wasn't quite as bad as I thought it was. He then set out an agenda of how the course was going to go and what to expect. He then took me through each session step by step at my own pace. At no point did I feel pressured or pushed into anything. As Adrian said to me at the start, I had the answer to all my own questions, he was just there to guide me towards the answers." Dario
"Adrian was fantastic. He is considered, thoughtful, challenging in a positive way, and most of all fun! I also regularly practice placement exercises and visualizations to calm me or help me deal with anxious situations." Kathleen
"Genuine down to earth man who made me feel relaxed and excited about the journey ahead. I found it easy to put my trust in him." Andrew
